How to Wear Skinny Jeans

I Wish I Could Wear Skinnies...

...And other denim worries solved. You asked, we answered!

I bought a pair of bleached jeans on a whim – now I have no idea what to wear them with.
Surprisingly versatile, these '80s throwbacks can look chill with a cotton military jacket or tres chic with a glittery tank and a blazer.

I want to buy a pair of low-rise jeans but I’m a bit chubby around my butt. What’s best for me?
Sometimes a bikini wax isn’t just for bikinis. That’s how low some rises, or the distance from crotch to waistline, have become. Jodi McMillen, owner of the online boutique blaec.com, says the low-rise is “easiest to wear, most comfortable, and good for bigger behinds.” Why? The waist hits low in the back, making the butt appear compact.
With super low jeans flat abs get full attention here. This rise is better for petites, because the short zipper looks appropriate. Super lows also help on bloated belly days (with a long, loose top) - the waistline hits below your pooch.

Should I leave cropped jeans to my teenage daughter or can I wear them?
Almost anyone can get away with the crop, unless you’re short. If you’re petite, you can rehem your pants so they hit in the middle of the calf. They’re fun with flip flops and sexy with boots or
high heeled sandals, but they look too childish when worn with trainers.

I love the look of skinny jeans, but they don’t suit me. What are my options?
A forgiving alternative to skinny jeans, straight cut jeans are slim enough to give you that leggy supermodel stance but relaxed enough that you won't need a shoehorn to wrangle yourself into them.
The straight leg cut is very versatile and works well for women with boyish figures or with a bit of a belly and thin legs, since it draws attention downward. Straight legs look best with the lift of high-heeled boots or stilettos, which make your legs look even longer.

Which cut of jeans will make my legs look longer?
Boot cut jeans give you two major things every woman wants: thinner hips and longer legs. The slight flare at the ankle offsets width at the hips, and that same flare draws attention down the leg, thereby creating the appearance of more length.

I like trouser-cut jeans, but have not idea to dress them up for work without looking like a tomboy. Suggestions?
This tailored style begs for heels – either boots or pumps will work. Add a blazer and you've got an ideal work outfit. Try a darker wash and slash pockets (rather than the traditional patch versions) to minimize a fuller seat.

Which is better: dry cleaning or laundering?
“Ideally, dry cleaning," says Francine Rabinovich, founder of Denim Therapy. "It will best preserve the shape and wash of your jeans." But to save yourself a weekly drycleaning bill, turn your jeans inside out and wash them on a delicate cycle. Remove them from the dryer while they're still a bit damp and hang them up to dry completely.

How do I tailor my jeans for multiple shoe heights?
Tailor them so the hem hits at the middle of your highest heel, suggests Kevin Christiana, Designer of Mynt 1792 and Christiana Zinn. That way, they'll be long enough to be worn with your stilettos but short enough so they won't drag on the ground when you're wearing lower heels or flats.

How can I restore old jeans?
Since ripped jeans are so popular right now, why not add some holes and rock the distressed look instead?

When I try on jeans in a shop but after a few days they are loose and baggy.
Jeans can stretch up to 10 percent. So when in dressing room doubt, go slightly snug.

I can never find a pair of jeans short enough for me. Can I alter them?
Hemming your jeans by more than seven centimetres can drastically change their silhouette. If you're vertically challenged, go for a petite cut with an inseam of 64 to 70 centimetres.
