Denim or Die
At last! Scientific proof that wearing jeans more often is good for your health
Wearing denim to work is a genius move all around. In a two-week study, researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that people who wore jeans to the office logged more steps throughout the day than they did on days when they were dressed in business attire. The scientists think that increased feelings of comfort made the employees more apt to be active.
Suit wearers
Before lunch 3,023 steps
During lunch 762 steps
After lunch 2,382 steps
Total 6,167 steps (4.68km)
Jeans wearers
Before lunch 3,331 steps
During lunch 821 steps
After lunch 2,566 steps
Total 6,718 steps (5.11km)
In addition to the increased calorie burn, those extra steps can benefit you on the job in these other ways:
1. Sharper vision – Leaving your desk for just five minutes gives your eyes some much needed recovery time from the strain caused by staring at your computer screen, according to a study in the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses
Journal.
2. A happier staff – Employees feel better about their bosses when they see them face-to-face, rather than communicate by email, according to researchers at Claremont Graduate University.
3. Disease-free arteries – Socialising at the office could save your life. Johns Hopkins researchers recently found that isolated employees are more likely to develop, and die of, cardiovascular disease.
