Denim Q&A
Our style editors help you decide what’s hot, and what’s not
Q: Are black jeans just as acceptable as blue? If so, what can I wear with them?
A: Yes, you can wear black jeans anywhere you'd sport blue denim. While black jeans may appear dressier than their casual blue counterparts, they're still jeans and therefore not a stand in for your smart black trousers. And, unlike blue jeans, which get better with age, black jeans should remain solid black. Once yours start fading into acid wash, it's time to throw them out.
Q: I know you're not supposed to wear a jean jacket with jeans. So what looks best?
A: You're right, the full denim outfit is a little too country for most girls. The “denim suit” is a tough look to pull off unless you’re a movie star or super model. Instead, add a buttery suede or leather jacket.
Q: What’s the deal with white jeans? Or any of colour, for that matter?
A: You see white trousers around quite a bit and it can look good, but it’s not easy. It’s a particular look that’s mostly suited to tall, skinny Brandon Flowers-alikes. White jeans can work, but you need the confidence to pull it off. As for the colours, well, call us traditionalists but blue is best.
Q: I saw Ralph Lauren wearing a denim shirt, looking pretty cool – can I get away with it?
A: Denim shirts have that rugged, rock-star appeal and it’s worth having one in the cupboard, but just know when to wear it and how to match it. With respect to Mr Lauren we’d advise to stay away from denim. If you must, go for dark jeans. But rather pair it with lighter trousers like cool corduroys or a fitted pair of chinos.
Q: My girlfriend says I should go for a skinnier, tighter jean style, but I don’t think I have the long, skinny legs to pull it off. When should a guy buck the trend?
A: Trust your instincts on this one – avoid the ultra skinny look if it doesn’t suit your body type. She’s probably correct in thinking a more fitted pair is the way to go, but you should comfortable. For the perfect fit, check out our Denim Doctor tool.
Q: Everyone wears jeans to work, but I how do I take it up a notch without looking like I’m trying too hard.
A: Three things: (1) go for a darker, indigo blue, (2) wear lace-ups shoes, (3) a slim-fit, buttond-down shirt that isn’t white. (And a belt that doesn’t scream boy-band.)
Q: Are there “weekend” jeans and “work” jeans?
A: Yes. If it’s baggy, torn, worn, distressed or stained, save it for the weekend. If you can wear it to the braai, chances are you shouldn’t be wearing to work.
Q: I’ve been invited to my girlfriend’s parents for dinner at a smart restaurant. Can I wear jeans?
A: Yes, but be selective. Unless it’s the local Country Club with a no-jeans policy, you’re pretty safe wearing jeans to any establishment these days as long as it’s dark denim and you dress them up with smart shoes and a cool jacket.
Q: My boss invited me to sit in on a meeting with the higher-ups – is a jacket over jeans okay or should I take out the suit?
A: In our office, that would work, but it’s risky. Rule of thumb is to take a cue from your boss. It would probably be safer to wear chinos or any other type of flat-front pants and jacket, no tie.
Q: Is there an occasion when I should definitely NOT wear denim?
A: Funerals, weddings and job interviews.
Q: Any tips for wearing cut-off jeans?
A: Ja, don’t cut them too short. Measure three finger-widths above the knee and you’re safe. Don’t worry about being too perfect, a rough cut keeps them honest. Best paired with slip slops and T-shirt for the beach. Don't go too baggy or you'll look like John Cena.
Q: Can I turn-up my jeans without looking like George Michael on a Greek island in an Eighties music video?
A: It’s a casual look that can easily go wrong, but our style gurus tell us that it was all the rage in Europe this summer. Jeans look best with a slight turn-up (avoid five rolls around your ankles) and some well worn boat shoes.
Q: Are expensive, designer-label jeans really worth it?
A: The more pertinent question is what jeans fit you best. How much you’re prepared to pay for them, is up to you.
Q: What’s the deal with frayed, holey jeans? In, or out?
A: The great thing about jeans is that you can pretty much get away with anything in the right situation. There’s nothing like a pair of worn in jeans, but save them for the beach bar or casual braai. Too many rips and tears and you’ll look like a boy band wannabe.
